A Taste of Manila

"Nothing great was ever achieved without enthusiasm."
- Ralph Waldo Emerson

A frizzly fall breeze and modest drizzles on a Saturday
afternoon didn't stop Galing Foundation's enthusiasm
to send a message of love to our young citizens
and the Fil-Am community.
The well-prep Kid's program preluded by a Liturgical
celebration with Rev.Fr. J.Reynie Paraon defines the
wisdom and spiritual grassroots of Philippine Americans
in Georgia. C.O.N.C.E.R.N, indeed, as his message of
"love your neighbor" poured generously even to the littliest
ones. Couldn't be prouder....
Galing's goal of literacy bridged us between two countries
across the miles reaching each other's hand to bond and
be a part of a cause to belong.
The children responded enthusiastically to the teachers'
pedagogical prowess and that is what this event is all about...
About our children who will shape the future of two countries
bonded by faith, affinity, roots, and by determination to inherit
a culture like no other.
Again, an honor to be invited, a pleasure to be with the "best"
FilAm kids, and their young parents whose effort to make a
difference was proded by a meaningful afternoon we will never
forget.
All these, because of the Filipino Veterans who opened the
door to stride for American dreams by shedding blood saving
world peace and democracy for us.
Congratulations PANIG for bringing us to the table of e-barangays.
Congratulations Galing for being literacy nurturing Georgians.
Greater Atlanta's LIteracy through Networking Georgians
Foundation, we salute your heroism touching the lives of our
children here and across the miles.

"A Taste of Manila" brings to you the author of the book "Gaya's Gift"

Saturday, November 11 at Edenwilde Clubhouse

"A Taste of Manila" brings to you the author of the book "Gaya's Gift"

Jennifer Evans is a freelance writer with a deep desire to use this gift to the glory of God. For about 10 years, she worked as a literacy specialist in the Philippines. During that time she spent her spare time writing. She finished a women's Bible study which has been used throughout that country entitled "Diamonds in the Rough, Jewels in the Making." In 2002, one of her children’s stories, "Gaya’s Gift," was published there in diglot (English/Tagalog). She has also written newspaper articles for one of Manila’s nationally distributed newspapers, The Philippine Star, and done many in-house articles for publications of the mission organization with which she was serving. She had opportunities to write curriculum to get vernacular storybooks and Scripture into use in public schools in the Philippines. She has also written motivational and promotional materials.

Jennifer has a B.A. in Christian Missions, an M.A. in Liberal Arts with a concentration in education, and other graduate work in linguistics and literacy. She has been a ghost-writer for administrative correspondence and for personal newsletters. In her personal journals, she enjoys writing poetry and has also written some fiction short stories. She has completed six biographical stories (one of which is under consideration currently for publication) and continues work on her own autobiography. She recently submitted her first non-fiction book for publication.

Jennifer and her husband, Gary, live in Canon, Georgia.

A letter from former Philippine President Fidel V. Ramos

A letter from former Philippine President Fidel V. Ramos

It is with great honor to share Mr. Ramos' recent letter. I proudly share this letter with our Filipino American Community in GA because it would not have been possible to accomplish such without the contribution of each and every person involved at the May 7, 2006 event. (Please click on:
http://malakingpasasalamat.blogspot.com/)

As inspired by Mahatma Gandhi, let us start the change that we want to see in the world.

******************

Dear Ms. Luetgers: (Toni)

Thank you for your letter dated July 5, 2006. I am happy to hear about the success of the FilCom/FilAm dinner to which you invited me and Mrs. Ramos. We congratulate you and laud the efforts of your foundation in helping our less-fortunate brothers and sisters in Lucban, Quezon. Your donations and dedication to work will surely make a big difference in the lives of many here at home.

Just recently, I had the chance to congratulate one of your kababayans Leo Oracion for his achievement as the 1st Filipino to reach the peak of Mr. Everest. Like you, he has brought pride to the province of Quezon. Though he was raised in Cebu, Leo was born in Lucban, Quezon. Please find attached news articles.

We look forward to hearing more about the activities and projects that your foundation is undertaking. Do let us know how our foundation can interface with you in the future.

Mabuhay/Best Wishes!!!

Signed
Fidel V. Ramos

Children's talent & intelligence stifled due to lack of education

"Education is the key to Asia's success" ---Fidel V. Ramos,
former Philippine President May 7, Atlanta, GA.

Millions of Filipinos live under desperate conditions and children
whose talents and intelligence are stifled because of their poverty,
lack of education and lack of opportunities to grow. So much
potential is wasted.

OUR MISSION:

Project Galing is an effort to help fight illiteracy in impoverished areas in the Philippines.

Our objectives are:

To partner with rural public libraries,
providing them materials that will
facilitate a learning environment
available to all children.

To provide indigent children access
to books (encyclopedias,
dictionaries, textbooks, references)
at rural public libraries.

To provide educational and training
tools (books & videos) to teachers
and caregivers.

To provide indigent children school
supplies and decent clothing.

BACKGROUND:

Project Galing (which means "great") was
founded in May 2005 by Toni Daya-
Luetgers, a native of the Philippines and an
award-winning artist/producer.

"Here in America, I realized the abundance
of used and outgrown materials including
school supplies cluttering our space.
Meanwhile in the rural areas of the
Philippines, indigent children suffer
illiteracy. Many do not have access to books
and school supplies."

Since, May 2005 PG has collected several
box full of donation from various individuals
and organizations in Atlanta to help Filipino
indigent children fight illiteracy in Lucban,
Quezon area. We hope to expand the
project to benefit other rural areas in the
near future.

As of June 23, 2006 Project Galing has sent 20 balikbayan boxes.
