 About the Guest Speaker

Jim McSweeney has worked for the National Archives and Records Administration for 25 plus year.   He currently serves as a Special Assistant to Legislative Archives, Presidential Libraries, and Museum Services.  From November 1998 to September 2012, he served as the Regional Administrator for the National Archives and Records Administration, Southeast Region.  During his career with NARA, Mr. McSweeney has worked in NARA's San Francisco, Laguna Niguel, and Atlanta facilities in capacities ranging from Appraisal and Disposition Branch Chief to Records Center Director to Records Management Director to Assistant Regional Administrator.  Mr. McSweeney was born and raised in the San Francisco Bay Area and received a bachelor of arts degree in Political Science from San Francisco State University and a masters of arts degree in American History from San Jose State University.  He is a member of the California Historical Society, the Atlanta Federal Executive Board, and the Society of Georgia Archivists.  Under his direction, the Southeast Region occupied two new facilities in 2004 and 2005: an 115,000 square foot archival facility (with exhibition and public program space) in Morrow, Georgia, as well as a 350,000 square foot Federal Records Center in Ellenwood, Georgia.  Mr. McSweeney has inaugurated innovative public programs with the Center for Civil and Human Rights, Clayton State University, the Truman and Roosevelt Presidential Libraries, Georgia Public Broadcasting, the Martin Luther King Jr. National Historic Site, the Atlanta Public School System, the Smithsonian Institute, the Afro American Historical and Genealogical Society, the Asian American and Pacific Islander community, and other cultural and higher education institutions throughout the region.  Under Mr. McSweeney’s leadership, the National Archives at Atlanta facility in Morrow, GA, became a center for community engagement, serving as a polling place, a host site for Naturalization Ceremonies, a meeting place for civic and fraternal organizations, and a national destination for family history research.  In the past five years, Mr. McSweeney and his staff have hosted national symposia on the Civil Rights Movement, the African American Experience, the Civil War, and the legacy of the Asian Pacific American community in the southeast.  Mr. McSweeney is a professed baseball junkie, ardent jazz enthusiast, dog lover, and proud father of a future archivist, actress, ballerina, or veterinarian.

Proceeds of this fundraising event will support the LDERA (Library Development and Educational Resource Assistance) Program.  Your support will help us cover the cost of packing and shipping of the donated educational materials to its outreach in the rural areas of the Philippines.

Our sincere thanks to all volunteers, donors, sponsors and guests who have joined us in support of Cross of Life’s International Dinner "Language of Love" held Saturday, October 6 benefiting our brothers and sisters across the globe.  

Pastor Jeong Kim, Heidl Wouk, Toni Luetgers, Arjho Turner, Hermon Rao, Chim Bvumbwe, and Denise Powell led prayer in 7 different languages!   

 

We were delighted to hear 10 year old Vivian Borg sing so beautifully!

Tim Heyerdahl, Gary Halverson, Toni Luetgers, Chim Bvumbwe, Hermon Rao, Denise Powell, Faith Bvumbwe, Pastor Jeong Kim, Young Kim, Danny Kim and Chris Kim shared their musical talents.

Toni Luetgers sang a Filipino song at Cross of Life for the first time.

We had 85 people including COL members, friends and sponsors who participated in the International Dinner.  All food was donated and represented 15+ countries from Asia, Africa, Europe and North America.

The board of Galing Foundation, Inc. in partnership with the office of the Philippine Honorary Consulate General in Atlanta announces the nomination process to award 2 students (1 in middle school and 1 in high school) as its 6th Youth Leaders.  The YLA (Youth Leadership Award) was created and organized to promote the importance of voluntarism, active engagement and commitment among the youth, in charitable organizations that benefits the community and beyond for a common good.

Save the Date: Saturday, October 6 International Dinner & Auction

Roswell, GA—On Saturday, October 6, Cross of Life Lutheran Church in Roswell will host its third annual  dinner fundraising event "Language of Love"  to benefit its missions in Africa, The Philippines and India. The evening’s events will include food from around the world, multi-cultural entertainment, and silent and live auctions. The community is welcome at no charge however, reservation is required. 

Funds raised by the auctions will be donated to several of the church’s charitable causes, including:

·         Malawi Mission in Southeast Africa—For the purchase of bicycles to provide much-needed transportation for the area’s pastors, as well as sewing machines to help the women improve their livelihood;

·         Galing Foundation in Mindanao, The Philippines—A 7 year old organization dedicated to covering the high costs of shipping new and gently used books and school supplies for the education of the region’s over 3,000 children; Padhar Mission School in central India—To contribute to students’ tuition, as well as to assist with the costs of operating and maintaining the school, which opened in 1903 and has over 30,000 graduates.

The evening will begin with the silent auction, during which refreshments will be served, followed by a welcome message that will include blessings in various languages; Hindi, Filipino, Blaan, Chichewa, Korean, German, Spanish and English. Dinner will feature dishes from far and wide. “Attendees will be treated to song and dance by a number of professional musicians,” said Janine Dismer, Social Concerns committee chair from Cross of Life. 

“Language of Love” will be held Saturday, October 6 from 5:30 – 8:30 p.m. at the church, which is located at 1000 Hembree Road in Roswell, just ¼ mile west of Highway 9/Alpharetta Highway.
